Cross Training – What is it and why is it important?
The basic definition of “cross training” as it applies to exercise in general means to exercise in a variety of ways. Maybe lift weights for strength and jog for cardio. Or engaging in both running and aerobic kick boxing for the cardio benefits. Cross training adds variety and interest to our exercise regimen and often exercises different muscles and parts of the body in different ways. These reasons alone offer enough appeal for engaging in cross training.
However, let’s examine this term deeper as it relates specifically to cross training in martial arts. Cross training takes on a slightly different angle when we apply it to our hand-to-hand combat training. In this case, cross training suggests we expand our training to include varying combat styles and practices. In addition to the benefits listed above, cross training in various fighting styles gives us a richer set of tools to call upon to defend ourselves when needed.
There are certain basic elements that are commonly shared among most (if not all) martial arts: body position and awareness, footwork, leverage, conservation of energy, focus of power. (Topics covered in more detail future blog posts.) When cross training, you’ll see how these elements are not only common, but blend well together. Deflecting an attack, paired with the execution of a counter punch and kick combination to set up a throw, leading ultimately to a final armbar as a finishing ground technique all require a smooth transition and fluidity of focus and power that only comes through a regimen of cross training.
Self-defense is not just grappling, or punching, or kicking, or joint locks, it tends to encompass all these components resulting in a skill set that better prepares the student for a variety of real-world self-defense scenarios.
OC Judo Coaching Staff approach cross training with an open mind. We encourage cross training by our members and welcome practitioners from different combat disciplines to join us (very often you’ll find a tendency to reject this philosophy in other more traditional schools). Students that want to expand their throwing and grappling skills and knowledge, adding a new dimension –and new tools – to their combat training are invited to join us. Moreover, we offer cross training classes aimed at incorporating and blending various styles, practices, and techniques in a holistic approach to self-defense.
